Mounted on the top of an armored vehicle, the actuator that controls the azimuth and elevation of a weapon station must survive the same conditions of weather, temperature, dust, vibration and shock as the vehicle itself. At the same time, it must be lightweight and low-profile to maintain vehicle weight limits and to keep vehicle clearance and center of gravity as low as possible. Above all, it must ensure reliably accurate positioning to engage moving targets, even as the vehicle itself is in motion.

For accurate targeting in highly dynamic conditions, actuators must continuously make precise adjustments―sometimes small, sometimes large―in response to input from the control system.
